The Problems

  1. We only pay for a small (500Mb) amount of server space.
  2. A PDF, Word document or set of images can easily add 1Mb or more to the size of an email message.
  3. It’s inefficient to send large email attachments to every member of the mailing list (and quite rude.)

 

To avoid wasting space the software that runs the mailing list will not allow an email of larger than 40Kb

If you try to send a larger email you will get a return email from the list that says,

Some time later a human (probably me (Mark)) will come along and delete your email for the reasons above.

The Solution.

Q: So what can I do to get my email delivered?

A: Instead of attaching files to your email you need to give links to them.

Q: What the flip does that mean?

A: Here’s one answer. There are many others, but this is the only one I’m going to go into.

Click this to get yourself a free Dropbox account.

Install their software on your Mac/PC and you will have a new folder called “Dropbox”

Inside that folder is another called “Public.”


The Public folder lets you easily share single files in your Dropbox. Any file you put in this folder gets its own Internet link that you can share with others – even non-Dropbox users.

  1. Drop a file into the Public folder.
  2. Right-click this file, then choose Dropbox > Copy Public Link. This copies an Internet link to your file that you can paste anywhere: emails, instant messages, blogs, etc.

 

So, instead of attaching those files you can now insert a link to them in your email. The link will only be a few bytes big and everyone will see your document.
