Macro Photography
As a follow-up to Tuesday’s talk on Macro/close-up photography here are three shots taken with three lens set-ups on a Nikon D300 for comparison of results (the side of each square on the target is 2.5mm):
Here’s the same target shot on the “macro” setting with a Fuji FinePix F40fd
However, if that camera really could produce a 1:1 life-size macro shot we’d expect it to look like:

SHORT CUTS ETC
Control Z = Undo
Control J = Duplicate Layer
Zoom Tool Double click on it and you view the image at 100%
Crop tool facility uses the toggle switch top of the tool bar between the size boxes to change between the 2 orientation sizes.
Tab key hides the palettes so you can view the full screen.
RUN AN ACTION
If you make an error in the set up of the action drag it to the bin within the action palette and start again.
Have an image on the screen to work with to apply the action to.
Example Say changing the size for PDI competitions.
Window/actions/
Click on the icon at the bottom of the action box that says create new action (2nd right)
Give it a name and you can assign an F key to it if you wish.
Then amend the image.
Image/image size/res changed to 72dpi/ok
Image/image size/1024 pixels on longest side
File/ Save/ then close the action click on left hand button to stop action
RUN THE ACTION
Select your file of images perhaps best to have a test file of say 10 images to play with to test this out first as once you run the action it is a devil to un do any errors. !!!!
File/automate/batch
Action palette look for your created action i.e. 72 dpi
Source /choose box = find your folder (test folder)
Destination/choose box this should be the same folder, but you can export the images to a new folder if you wish.

ADD A STROKE TO AN IMAGE
Open image and make a duplicate copy Cntl J
Edit/stroke/
Then select your colour and size etc.
CREATE NEW CANVAS/PAGE
File/New/
Give it a title a and select the document size from the menus
Keep res at 300dpi and the background content as white
Ok
DRAG AN IMAGE ONTO THE NEW VCANVAS and then resize
Click on move tool and drag image across onto new canvas
It will snap across then edit/transform/scale
Grab the corner pull the edge out WHILE you have the shift key depressed, otherwise the image will not scale up/down in proportion.
Press return key to action the change.
TO ADD MORE IMAGES TO THE CANVAS
to make a montage using the guides to position the images in correct place.
View/show/smart guides
Open 2 images and drag these onto the new canvas you created above
Then align them look for the pink guide lines
In the top tool box you have options to align in various ways. Place the mouse to hover over the symbol and it shows what it does.
SHARPEN + SOFTEN and add Vignette to an Image
Retouch image first, i.e. remove blemishes/ things with clone tool
Image/mode/lab colour
Click on the channels palette (you might have to open this)
Click on lightness, this turns image to b+w
then add Filter/sharpen/USM (unsharp mark) with 100/2/3
Image/mode/rgb
Dup layer (cntrl J)/Filter/blur/Gaussian Blur 15=25% say use 20%and reduce opacity slider to 20%
Layers/Flatten layers
Dup Layer (J)
Blending modes selection (this is in the layers palette at the top, look for the word Normal, click on this and a drop down menu appears) pick multiply from menu (Adding multiply is a quick way to darken images) reduce opacity if wanted
Marquee tool
to make a selection but add feather before making selection to give a soft edge Go to feather box on tool bar and change to 155px
Make selection then press DELETE button look at layers palette your dup layer shows the deletion which is a lighter area than the none selected area.
Make another dup layer (J) this adds the vignette
Layer/flatten Layer
SAVE
